United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO)

Sawubona worked as a partner with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in the implementation of the National Quality Infrastructure Project (NQIP) in Nigeria. The €23 million project was funded by the European Union and implemented in Nigeria by UNIDO in collaboration with the Federal Ministries of Industry, Trade & Investment, Agriculture, and Health. The goal of the project was to build the quality infrastructure needed to create trust for Nigeria’s export in the international market.

In this project, Sawubona’s role was to develop market-based capacity in the organizations established to strenghten Nigeria’s quality infrastructure. Sawubona’s approach to these engagement focused on;

  • An analysis of the macroeconomic environment to understand the impact of macroeconomic factors like GDP growth, national debt, interest rates and inflation on the business environment
  • An analysis of the competitive landscape of the industry, using management analytical tools
  • Market scoping analysis to estimate market demand for the services these companies provided
  • Recommendations on internal enablers needed to take advantage of the market opportunities in (3) above
  • Forecast financial models to show potential return on investment / impact of the newly created organisations

Some of the organisations Sawubona supported UNIDO in strengthening include;

  • Nigerian National Accreditation Service (NINAS)
  • Quality Assurance Training Centre for the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)
  • Quality Assurance Training Centre for the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN)
  • Quality Assurance Training Centre for the National Productivity Centre (NPC)

A significant part of the quality assurance value was focused on the textile and leather goods value chain, given the historical significance of the value chain to Nigeria’s export income. Particular focus of our research was on the quality gaps in Nigeria’s textile and leather goods industry vertical.
